Volunteers

Our volunteers are a diverse group of individuals who are committed to making a difference in their community.

Thank you for your interest in volunteer service with Wesselman Woods! Volunteers are truly critical to our success.

Without the talent and dedication of people like you, we could not do what we do. Whether you only have an hour or you have a full day, we hope you will consider joining Wesselman Woods in our mission to create experiences that connect people and nature, motivating them to lead sustainable lives and take action to protect our environment.

In general, volunteers should be aged 16 or over. In rare cases, volunteers aged 15 and under may be acceptable but anyone under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Below are brief descriptions of positions for which we typically need volunteers.

Note: some positions have separate forms to fill out (for scheduling purposes) and/or require further specialized training, which will be provided as needed.

  • Help us make our summer months and monthly free days even better!

    Oversee the Nature Playscape and Treehouse as a Playscape Ranger.

    Or, sign up as a Nature Center Attendant to lead guests in the right direction but also help keep the Nature Center looking spotless.

    These hours can be counted toward Indiana Master Naturalist volunteer requirements.

  • Duties

    • Work consistently one day per week
    • Work from either 8 AM - 12:30 PM OR 12:30-5 PM
    • Assist staff when needed
    • Answer phones
    • Admit guests
    • Be a welcoming presence at the Nature Center!

  • Maple Sugarbush Festival
    first weekend in March each year

    • Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, 2025 from 7 AM to 1 PM each day

  • CISMA and Wesselman Woods team up to remove invasive species at Wesselman Woods and Howell Wetlands and we need your help protecting these natural areas!

    • Last Saturday of every month from 9 AM - Noon (excluding November and December)

    • Wear long sleeves/long pants.

    • Bring your work gloves and any loppers or hand cutters you want to use.

    • Water coolers and snacks provided.

  • Our Wednesday Work Crew (WWC) works each Wednesday from 9-11:30 AM, followed by a lunch provided by Wesselman Woods.

    Duties include (but are not limited to):

    • Trail maintenance
    • Cleaning
    • Cutting down trees, splitting logs
    • Planting trees and flowers
    • Upkeep of flower beds
    • Installation of various equipment
    • Event preparations
    • Fence removal and repair
